Happy 129th, Chiropractic!

The Founding of Chiropractic

Date: September 18, 1895 – The profession is 129 years young!

Founder: Dr. Daniel David (D.D.) Palmer

Location: Davenport, Iowa

The First Adjustment

D.D. Palmer, a self-educated healer and magnetic healer by trade, performed the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895. The patient, Harvey Lillard, was a janitor who had lost most of his hearing 17 years prior after a back injury. Palmer believed that Lillard’s hearing loss was due to a misaligned vertebra in his spine. Palmer adjusted Lillard’s spine, and after several treatments, Lillard reported a partial restoration of his hearing. This event led Palmer to explore the connection between the spine, nervous system, and overall health, giving birth to the chiropractic profession.

Early Growth of Chiropractic

Palmer began teaching chiropractic in 1897, opening the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport. His son, B.J. Palmer, took over the school in 1906 and played a major role in advancing the field of chiropractic through education and research. He helped to spread the practice worldwide and is often called the "Developer" of chiropractic.

Chiropractic Philosophy:

Chiropractic care is based on the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal itself, especially when the spine and nervous system are in proper alignment. Misalignments of the spine, known as vertebral subluxations, can interfere with the nervous system and hinder the body's natural healing processes. Chiropractors use adjustments of varying types to help restore the body's ability to heal itself.

Key Milestones:

  • 1895: D.D. Palmer performs the first chiropractic adjustment.

  • 1897: Palmer School of Chiropractic opens.

  • 1906: B.J. Palmer assumes leadership and expands the school.

  • 1922: Chiropractic licenses begin to be recognized in the U.S., providing a legal framework for the practice.

  • 1974: Chiropractic care becomes fully licensed in all 50 U.S. states.
